Defeating The Demon of Procrastination

I'm sure you've been there. You've been in that place of procrastination. You said you were going to write that book . . . three years ago. I get it. The kids got on your nerves. The job increased your work load. The finances got tight. Bills kept crashing into your plans like the waves of the sea during a hurricane. You mother-in-law came by for an extended stay. I get it. But here you are years later still saying, "I'm going to write my book." And I project that three years from now you'll still be saying, "I'm going to write my book." Why is this? Well, it's simple: procrastinators often wait for their circumstances to line-up and become perfect, therefore allowing them the time to focus. Truthfully, every goal you set in life you have to FIGHT to accomplish; and writing a book is no different. You must fight for the time to write, fight for the space to think, fight through the frustration, fight through writer's block, fight against the stress that hinders creativity from flowing, make the kids settle down so that you can find time to think, tell mother-and-law that right now you're busy, turn off the television (I know that's your favorite show, but it will come on again), and make the sacrifices necessary to get the job done.

Dictate to your circumstances rather than allow them to dictate to you.

The best way to rebuke the demon of procrastination is to simply start writing. Sit down right now and pull out a piece of paper and a pen and begin jotting down your thoughts. Writing is like stretching: the more you do it, the more your blood flows. Don't try to write a bestseller in the next five minutes. Just try to capture one of those fleeing thoughts before they get sucked into the black hole of oblivion. The more you write, the more your thoughts will flow. The more you look for perfection, the least likely you are to write. Forget perfection! Just write something! Do it now!

Don't let that book die on the inside of you. It's waiting to be shared with the world.
